About viachiangmai
Who is behind this guide, how the tours are chosen, and how the site is funded.
I'm Gregory, and I come from Brussels, in Belgium. I've travelled in Asia, Europe, North America and Africa, but Chiang Mai holds a special place in my heart.
I lived there for three years. I first came as a tourist, then studied Thai at Chiang Mai University, and later worked in sales for export companies. That let me see the city from more than one side: first as a visitor passing through, then as an expat slowly getting to know everyday life.
Over those years I picked up the basics of Thai, discovered the local food and took the time to understand the habits and the culture around me. I've travelled a great deal around Thailand, and Chiang Mai is still my favourite city.
With viachiangmai, I want to share that attachment and help you plan your trip, choose what to see and do, and make the most of the city once you are there.
Exploring on your own, or booking a tour
Chiang Mai and the area around it are easy to explore on your own. A guided tour can also be a good way into the food, the culture or the outdoors, depending on what you enjoy and how you like to travel.
The GetYourGuide tours on this site are chosen for their reputation, their programme and how relevant they are to a traveller. I look at each tour before I list it. That doesn't mean I have taken part in every one of them myself.
How the site is funded
Some links to GetYourGuide are affiliate links. If you book through one of them, viachiangmai may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. These commissions help fund the site. Thank you to everyone who supports the project this way.
Checking the facts, and hearing from you
Every article is proofread and its facts are checked before it goes online. My time on the ground shapes the site, but places, visiting conditions and services can change.
If you spot a mistake or have a suggestion, write to me at the address below. Your feedback helps make the guides better.
About the photos
The site mixes my own photos with images from free-to-use photo libraries. Sadly, I lost a large share of my older photos, and I plan to add new ones of my own on my next trips.
The Bangkok to Chiang Mai guide also includes a composite illustration created with the help of artificial intelligence. It combines several elements and does not depict a scene photographed on location.
Some photos are edited, for example to adjust the colours or to remove people and respect their privacy. These edits may be made with digital tools, including AI tools. The photos on this page have only been cropped and adjusted for light, colour and sharpness.
I hope viachiangmai inspires you to discover a city that means so much to me, and that it helps you on a first visit as much as on the ones that follow.
