Chiang Mai Evenings and Nightlife

Most evenings here need nothing booked at all. Four are worth planning, and they suit four different people.

An evening in Chiang Mai can take five shapes. Four are booked: a Muay Thai fight night at a stadium, a khantoke dinner with Lanna dance, the Siam Dragon cabaret, or a bar crawl with a host and a group. The fifth is booked by nobody: a night market, or a walk and dinner, decided as you go. It is the option we recommend most often.

The four are not versions of the same night. Muay Thai is a real sporting event with a crowd around it; the khantoke is a seated dinner with a stage programme; the cabaret is a seventy-minute show of costume and choreography; the bar crawl is a way of not spending the evening on your own. Which one is right depends on you, not on the product.

At the weekend, the free option is already arranged: the Saturday Walking Street on Wualai Road and the Sunday Walking Street in the old city. They are markets, they have a guide of their own, and there is nothing to book for either. If what you want is an evening that is not a night out at all, look instead at Doi Suthep from late afternoon: two temples on the mountain, and back in town after dark.

What to do in Chiang Mai at night

On most nights the best evening needs nothing booked. At the weekend that is a walking street. On other nights it is dinner at the Chang Phuak Gate food stalls, just outside the north gate, which run most evenings; the Night Bazaar, open every night, is the fallback.

Or skip the markets and walk. The old city is compact and flat, its main streets are busy and well lit in the evening, and wandering, then dinner wherever looks good, makes a whole evening. Most of the old city goes quiet by eleven.

If you would rather walk among cocktail bars than temples, do it in Nimman, north-west of the moat: wide streets, speciality coffee, two malls, and the part of town where you will meet people.

Four evenings are worth booking: Muay Thai, the cabaret, the khantoke dinner, and the bar crawl if you are travelling alone and want a group. What separates them is set out just below.

What do you want from tonight?

Five answers, and the one we give most often costs nothing.

I want energy

Our take: The one we would choose for atmosphere. A live sporting event with a crowd around it, which is a different thing from sitting down in front of a performance.

Best for
An evening with noise, a crowd and something at stake
Included
A stadium entry ticket, nothing else: no transfer, food or guide
Time
An evening. Start times are set by the stadium, not by you
Skip if
Watching combat sport up close is not for you

I want a show

Our take: A fun, straightforward show. Choose it for costume, choreography and easy entertainment, and choose something else if you want cultural context.

Best for
A short, undemanding night out
Included
A seat at the seventy-minute show. Transfer is a paid extra; no food or drink
Time
Seventy minutes, plus the transfer if you take it
Skip if
You want the evening to mean something

Siam Dragon cabaret show From €18

I want something traditional

Our take: Go for the format, not the food. This is a recommendation for the performance and the shape of the evening, and it is not one of our food recommendations. Eat elsewhere if food is the priority.

Best for
Seeing the Lanna dinner-and-dance format once, in one sitting
Included
A set northern dinner and the Lanna dance programme. Drinks extra, transfer optional
Time
105 minutes to three hours, depending on the option you book
Skip if
Dinner is the part of the evening you care most about

I want to meet people

Our take: The social structure, not the bars. Its value is giving a solo traveller a ready-made group for the evening, and that is what to judge it on.

Best for
Solo travellers, and first nights in a new city
Included
A host, entry to four venues, and beer and shots listed as included under the offer's terms. Getting there and home is up to you
Time
Five and a half hours, four venues
Skip if
You already have people to go out with

Chiang Mai bar crawl, four venues From €15

I don't want to book anything

Our take: Most nights, this is the right answer. At the weekend, a walking street: the Saturday Walking Street on Wualai Road, or the Sunday Walking Street in the old city. On other nights, the food stalls at Chang Phuak Gate, or simply a walk and dinner. Either way, there is nothing to pay in advance.

Best for
Travellers who would rather wander, eat and decide as they go
Included
Nothing. You pay only for what you eat and buy on the night
Time
As long as the evening turns out to be
Skip if
You specifically want a ticketed event or a ready-made group

Which market is worth the evening

No booking needed

For a night out without a booking, we do not name bars or clubs. What we can say is that the neighbourhood you sleep in shapes your evenings more than any booking will, because that is usually where they start. The where to stay guide, linked above, describes the old city, Nimman and the riverside.

The four above are the bookable nights out on this page, and the list is short on purpose. We have not written a best-bars page because we do not have one worth publishing: bars and venues can change quickly, and naming places we have not checked ourselves is how a guide turns into a directory.

Common questions

Is there much nightlife in Chiang Mai?

There is more than one kind of evening. This page covers four you can book (a Muay Thai fight night, a khantoke dinner, a cabaret and a bar crawl) and the free one: a night market, or a walk and dinner. It does not list bars or clubs, because venues change faster than we can check them.

What is there to do on a weekday evening?

The four bookable evenings are sold by date, and the calendar on each booking page shows which nights are available. Without a booking, Chang Phuak Gate is a food market most nights and the Night Bazaar opens every night; the two walking streets are weekend evenings only. Which market suits your evening is a question for the night markets guide rather than for this page.

Do I need to book an evening in advance?

Rarely more than a few hours. The cabaret asks for at least five hours' notice and the khantoke dinner three, which in practice means booking in the morning for the same night. None of that applies to a market, which asks nothing.

Which evening would you pick if you only did one?

The Muay Thai, if the idea does not put you off. It is the only one of the four that is an event rather than a performance, and booking it means choosing a date and buying a ticket for it. If combat sport is not for you, the cabaret is the easiest evening and the shortest, and the khantoke is the one with a dinner and a Lanna dance programme.

Is it safe to walk back at night?

The old city and Nimman are busy and well lit, and walking back is normal. Traffic is the practical thing to watch most closely after dark, especially when crossing the moat roads or where pavements disappear and scooters use them. A Grab across town costs very little.
