The experience

Best for
Seeing the dinner-and-dance format once, in one sitting
Not for you if
Dinner is the part of the evening you care most about. Go for the stage, and eat well on a different night

A khantoke is the low, round, lacquered tray that northern Thai food is served on, and a khantoke dinner is an evening built around it: you sit low, dishes arrive together on the tray, and a stage programme of Lanna dance, music and costume runs alongside. GetYourGuide lists the meal as included and the transfer as an option; the entry-level ticket is the one without it.

Our position on this one needs saying plainly, because most pages will not say it. We recommend it for the performance and for the shape of the evening. It is not one of our food recommendations. The tray is a fair introduction to northern dishes and it is not where you will eat the best version of any of them, which is a normal trade for a venue cooking a set menu for a full room every night.

That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to book it for the right thing: an evening with a stage, a format worth seeing once, and somewhere to take people who would rather sit down than stand in a market. Eat elsewhere on another night, and our article on northern food says where to start.

We recommend it for the performance and the shape of the evening. It is not one of our food recommendations.

How the evening works

  1. Getting there

A hotel transfer is offered as a paid option. The entry-level ticket does not include it, so you arrive on your own.

  2. The tray

The meal is included in the booking, served northern-style on the low khantoke tray you sit around.

  3. The stage

A live programme of Lanna dance, music and costume runs as part of the same evening. It is the half we would book it for.

Why this one

01

The performance is the reason

Live Lanna dance, music and costume, on a stage, as part of the ticket. That is what we would book it for and what we would judge it on.

02

The meal is included

Northern dishes on the khantoke tray, included in the price. A fair introduction to the format rather than the best northern food in the city.

03

Everyone stays seated

Useful with parents, with children old enough to sit through it, or on a night when nobody wants to walk a market end to end.

04

From €18 without transfer

The entry-level option is the one without a hotel pickup. Adding the transfer is a separate choice with its own price.

Common questions

Is this the best northern food in Chiang Mai?

No, and we would rather say so than sell you the evening on a claim it cannot meet. A venue serving a set menu to a full room every night is cooking for volume, and that shows. The tray is a fair introduction to the dishes; the best version of any of them is somewhere smaller and cheaper.

Then why do you list it at all?

For the performance and the format. A live Lanna dance and music programme, a seated evening with a stage, and a shape of night out that is worth seeing once. Judged on that, it is a good evening. Judged as dinner, it is an average one.

What is a khantoke?

The low, round, lacquered tray northern Thai food is traditionally served on, and by extension the meal itself. Dishes arrive together on the tray rather than in courses, and everyone sits low around it.

Are drinks included?

No. Drinks are ordered and paid for separately, and that is worth factoring in when you compare the €18 ticket with a normal dinner somewhere else.

Do I need the transfer?

Not on the entry-level ticket, which is the one at €18 and does not include it. The transfer is offered as a paid option; whether it is worth it depends on where you are staying, and a Grab across the city is not expensive.
